Arthur F. Noskowiak Endowed Graduate Fellowship in Wood Materials & Engineering
Award Amount: 2 awards of $750 annually
Eligibility: Current WSU graduate students in wood materials and engineering.
About: This fellowship honors Arthur F. Noskowiak, an early faculty member of the Wood Materials & Engineering Lab (WMEL), which is now CMEC. His research focused on the strength properties of Douglas Fir and contributed foundational knowledge to the field of wood engineering.
John Westall Talbott Memorial Fund
Award Amount: 1 award of $400 annually
Eligibility: Current WSU students. Preference given to undergraduate students
About: John Westall Talbott was a wood technician at WMEL (now CMEC) who earned his master’s degree in wood utilization from the University of Idaho at age 57. He was known for his research on particleboard and innovative building techniques aimed at minimizing waste of forest products, energy, and living space.
Steven K. Nickolls Memorial Scholarship
Award Amount: 1 award of $500 annually
Eligibility: Current WSU graduate students in Materials Science. Preference for doctoral students. U.S. citizenship required. Interest in wood technology encouraged.
About: Established by the friends and family of Steven K. Nickolls, a 1978 Ph.D. candidate in Wood Technology at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. This scholarship honors students who demonstrate dedication, potential for continued achievement, and a professional attitude rooted in service and compassion.
Thomas M. Maloney Graduate Scholarship
Award Amount: 2 awards of $750 annually
Eligibility: Current WSU graduate students specializing in wood materials and engineering
About: Named after Dr. Thomas M. Maloney, a distinguished professor in Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) at Washington State University. A leading authority on wood composite materials, Dr. Maloney authored over 400 publications and led pioneering research in wood housing. He served as Director of the Wood Materials & Engineering Lab (WMEL), the original name of what is now CMEC.
Weyerhaeuser Composite Materials and Engineering Graduate Fellowship
Award Amount: 2 awards of $2,000 annually
Eligibility: WSU graduate students in wood materials and engineering. U.S. citizenship required
About: The purpose of this fellowship is to increase the number of Wood Materials and Engineering graduate students, and to provide the financial incentive to attract a top-quality graduate student.
